Individual Services

The detention program meets each individual youth’s nutritional, emotional, spiritual, educational, recreational, physical, and personal needs while in our care.  We also ensure that our occupants are available for all scheduled court hearings.

Social services include individual and group counseling, as well as family counseling when appropriate.  Substance abuse education and assistance programs are also provided, as are crisis intervention and general mental health counseling.

Residential Services

Five residence buildings house sixteen occupants each.  Each room has a shower, toilet, and lavatory.  Each building has two washers and dryers.  Continual custodial care is provided and direct care workers provide 24-hour supervision.

Recreational Services

Our day-time schedule is well planned to include recreational activities.  Our 3.7-acre recreation site contains regulation size gymnasium and provides adequate space for football and baseball.

Other recreational activities include ping-pong, volleyball, horseshoes, and other indoor and outdoor activities.

Non-denominational religious programs are available several evenings per week, and youths participate on a voluntary basis

Educational Services

Our alternative school is housed in a five-classroom building complete with a library, and approved by the Louisiana State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Once admitted, each student is administered a standardized test and interviewed to determine their level of educational placement.  Test results provide the administrator and teachers with essential information about the educational needs and attainment levels of each incarcerated student.  A plan of individual study is then designed, utilizing the most appropriate tools and materials available for their needs.  In order to effectively address the wide disparity of individual education needs, reliance is placed upon computer-assisted instructions.  Not only are there computers in the classroom, but there are also computer classes.

Proper course work is provided to keep the youth current with the educational levels of their peers so that they may return to their schools upon their exit of our care.  The student’s daily attendance and report card are accepted as if they spent the incarcerated period at their regular school.

Nutritional Services

The food services program provides three hot meals per day plus a late-night snack, supplying a nutritionally balanced diet for residents.  Meals are served in a separate dining hall, which accommodates up to 100 persons.

There is a full-time, experience food services supervisor on staff.  A registered dietitian provides general supervision and consultation to the food services supervisor.

Health-Related Services

Medical on-site services are provided by contractual arrangement with a doctor.  Ordinary sick call is conducted RN or LPN available at the center.  Dental service is provided to any youth housed at the center by a licensed dentist.  The state hospital system is used for any resident who may require additional medical treatment.  Emergencies are handled through the parish’s 911 system and transported via Acadian Ambulance to the nearest hospital.

Private services not described are referred to as additional services and are not included in our daily rate.  These additional services can include private help by a hospital, dentist, psychiatric and/or psychological sessions and some prescriptions drugs.

All efforts are made to use public facilities such as the mental health clinic, parish health units, and other social services.
