Special Programs
Special Programs consist of a group of small
programs that aid families in emergency situations. Varied
services are provided to families such as: utility payments, food, clothing, medical, rent, mortgage, homemaker,
weatherproofing of homes, and counseling. Programs within this
division are: Weatherization, Emergency Food & Shelter,
Helping Hands, Commodities, Homemaker Services, Housing
Counseling, and Low-Income Energy Assistance.

***Weatherization ***
Funds are used to cover cost of
weatherizing homes of
low-income residents. The homes are weather proofed to reduce the
high cost of utility payments. Priority is given to the elderly, disabled, and households with
young children.
Services are
available only one time per household for residents. |

***Emergency
Assistance
***

This
program is funded by United Way, Salvation Army, Community Food &
Nutrition and the Emergency Food & Shelter program.
Financial assistance is given to families and individuals in
immediate, temporary, and emergency situations. Services include
providing financial assistance for clothing, rent, mortgage or utility
payments, food vouchers, medical bills and medication, assistance with
material for building handicapped ramps or rails, and other basic
necessities.

***Helping Hand ***
Entergy collects funds from local residents who voluntarily add $ 1.00
or more to their monthly electric bill. The funds collected in St. James Parish are
returned to this department to assist residents who pay unusually high utility bills.
Must be entergy customer and meet other eligibility criteria. |

***Commodities ***
Commodities are distributed quarterly to low-income residents under
guidelines established by the Department of Agriculture. Commodities provide
a well-balanced meal to low-income families. Households are served on a quarterly basis, first come
first served. No waiting list |

***Homemaker ***
The purpose of this program is to provide home care services
such as
cleaning, shopping, etc., to elderly who are homebound due to illness or
disability. This service is normally temporary until a more permanent arrangement
can be
made. |

***Low
Income Energy Assistance Program ***
This program assists low-income households in meeting the burden of
high home heating and cooling expenses by making a portion of a payment to energy
companies. Households can be assisted yearly. |

Friday: 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
